SPECIAL RELEASE: The Mel Stribling Bouldin Scholarship Fund

Mary Ellen Stribling Bouldin '50, known then and still, as Mel, brought her amazing energy, intelligence, strength, and talents for leadership to the college of her choice where she was destined to apply them all to her studies, friendships, the lives and governance of her fellow students, and to the college we all came to love. Mel was President of the Civic Association and friend to everyone. In 1968, Mel was one of four alumnae to be honored with the Alumnae Achievement Award at the commencement ceremonies.

After her years at Stephens, Mel continued her studies at the University of North Carolina, where she was chosen the most outstanding student during her senior year. Soon after graduation, she married Marshall Bouldin, a well-known portrait artist. He painted the portrait of Stephens President Seymour Smith that hangs in Senior Hall.

Mel decided to fulfill her long desire to study medicine, and entered the University of Tennessee Medical School, in Memphis, in 1956. She stood at the head of her class during eleven of the twelve quarters of that program. She maintained her practice in gynecology and obstetrics in Memphis for some time and, later, returned to her family's home in Clarksdale, Mississippi where she became the Clinician for the Coahoma County Health Department and continued to serve the needs of women in that area.

While contacting members of our class about our 55th reunion, in April of this year, we learned that an automobile accident had left Mel with serious injuries, robbing her of her ability to communicate verbally, as well as other disabilities.

Since learning of that sad news, some of us have been exploring ways in which her outstanding contributions to Stephens and to the lives of many of us, might be honored.

As outlined by Marge Phillippe Kelly, president of the classic classes, in her recent letter, President Libby and the Office of Development and Alumnae Relations have established the Annual Named Scholarship. For a pledge of $2500/year for three years, an alumna can establish a scholarship in her name or in the name of someone she would like to honor. A scholarship in honor of Mel would provide a tribute to this women who symbolizes so well what Stephens College made possible for us to learn about ourselves and our world.

Mel has said, as we all have many times, that Stephens changed her life. We invite each of you to participate in what we believe is a fitting way to honor Mel's values and love for Stephens. Your gift to Stephens College will be directed toward the Mel Stribling Bouldin Scholarship by noting this on the memo portion of your check.

For information on your donation to this fund, please contact Jean Fahnestock.
